Operated by the U.S. Air Force, the SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed as a black project in the 1960s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. It performed at high speeds and altitudes to outrace enemies during aerial combat, and was also able to detect and avoid ground missile attacks.
This AF1 model represents the SR-71 #962 that was as part of Detachment 1 based at Kadena AB, Okinawa. Det 1 flew missions from Okinawa from 1968-1990. #962 flew the last operational flight from Kadena, AB on January 1990.
The model is highly detailed with squadron markings, panel lines, detailed cockpit with pilot figure. The model can be displayed with multiple optional configurations, The landing gear is optional, one can select to display the landing gear in its extended position or to cover the wheel wells as in the inflight position. The model also comes with internal and external payloads which include fuel tanks, 2 medium bombs and two air to air missiles. Metal display stand included.
