Operated by the U.S. Air Force, the SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed as a black project in the 1960s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. It performed at high speeds and altitudes to outrace enemies during aerial combat, and was also able to detect and avoid ground missile attacks.
This AF1 model represents the SR-71 Bueno Number 61-7976. The aircraft started assembly on 13 April 1966 and was rolled out on 18 January 1967. The aircraft first flew in May 1967 and had a career of 2985.7 flight hours. “Snarling Cat” is now located in the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson Airforce Base, Dayton, Ohio.
