The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters, which were designed incorporating air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. The Tomcat first flight was on December 21, 1970. It was introduced into service with the United States Navy on September 22nd 1974 and was retired on from the United States Navy in September 22nd 2006. Production ran from 1969 to 1991 and 712 aircraft were built.
The F-14’s only foreign purchaser was the Imperial Iranian Air Force during the reign of the last Shah of Iran. A total of 80 F-14’s were ordered. When the Shah was toppled in 1979 the air force was renamed the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. The F-14’s saw extensive combat during the Iran & Iraq war (1980-1988) with the Iranian F-14’s shooting down approximately 160 Iraqi aircraft. In 2014 there was an estimated 28 remaining F-14’s in service with Iran.
This AF1 model represents an F-14D with US Navy squadron VF- 84 “Jolly Rogers” based at NAS Oceana. The model has no landing gear and is displayed as if in flight. The wings are variable to show the different flight configurations of the F-14.
VF-84 was part of Carrier Air Wing – 8. VF-84 flew F-14s from 1977 until 1995 when the squadron was disbanded. In 1980 the squadron participated in the motion picture The Final Countdown which propelled the skull-and-crossbones-adorned F-14's to international stardom. The movie featured a memorable scene involving two VF-84 Tomcats engaging two Japanese A6M Zeros.
