The Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" is a long-range fighter aircraft formerly manufactured by Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 carrier fighter. The first flight occurred April 1st 1939 and introduced into service July 1st 1940. It was retired at the end of World War II. Approximately 10,900 aircraft were built.
This Atlas Editions A6M3 model is representative of a A6M3 Zero from the 251st Air Group (Kokutai) Imperial Japanese Navy 1943 flown by Hiroyoshi Nishizawa.
Hiroyoshi Nishizawa was an Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service ace who was confirmed to have at least 36 aerial victories during WWII. (Unconfirmed accounts claim over 100 victories) He fought in the New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Philippines campaigns. He was killed over the Philippines when the KI-49 “Helen” transport plane he was riding in was shot down on 26 October 1944 by F6F Hellcats from VF-14.
