The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). The B-17 was primarily employed by the USAAC in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy were the primary major commands responsible for employing the B-17 in Europe.
This Daron postage stamp is a replica of B-17F “Boeing Bee” (Bureau Number 42-29782). The plane was built at Boeing Seattle as a B-17F. Modified in Wyoming and subsequently used by training units at Blythe Field and McClellan Field. On 5 November 1945, shipped to Altus, Oklahoma for disposal, but withdrawn in 1946 and shipped to Stuttgart, Arkansas, for display. Used 1968–1985 was water bomber and air tanker. Acquired in 1988 by Museum of Flight and used in making of 1990 Memphis Belle movie. Restored 1991–1998 by Boeing and given the name "Boeing Bee." The aircraft is potentially airworthy but not flown since 1998.
This B-17F is an excellent addition to your diecast aircraft collection.
