The Boeing EA-18G Growler is an American carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft, a specialized version of the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet. The EA-18G replaced the Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowlers in service with the United States Navy. The Growler's electronic warfare capability is primarily provided by Northrop Grumman. The EA-18G began production in 2007 and entered operational service with the US Navy in late 2009. Australia has also purchased twelve EA-18Gs, which entered service with the Royal Australian Air Force in 2017. There were 100 EA-18G’s built as of 2014.
This highly detailed Hobby Master model represents a Boeing EA-18G Growler AJ500 bureau number 166943, shown with Next Generation Jammers and is assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 142 (VAQ-142) “Grey Wolves” during the squadron’s 2023 deployment as part of Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW-8) embarked aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78.
VAQ-142, nicknamed the "Gray Wolves," was established on 1 June 1988 and originally operated the EA-6B Prowler before transitioning to the EA-18G Growler. The squadron's primary role is electronic warfare, including electronic attack (EA), electronic support (ES), and electronic protection (EP). Their mission is to degrade or deny the enemy's use of the electromagnetic spectrum, thereby ensuring the success of friendly operations.
The transition to the EA-18G Growler marked a significant upgrade in the squadron's capabilities, providing enhanced electronic warfare and communications jamming technologies. VAQ-142 continues to be a vital asset to the U.S. Navy, supporting a wide range of missions and maintaining readiness to respond to emerging threats worldwide.
As with most Hobby Master models this EA-18G features engraved panel lines, antennas, surface details an opening canopy, a well-appointed cockpit (with instrumentation details), full weapons complement, optional-position landing gear, authentic squadron markings, and a display stand.
