The Douglas SBD Dauntless is a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy's main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The type earned its nickname "Slow But Deadly" (from its SBD initials) during this period.
This Hobby Master model is a replica of the US Navy SBD-2 Dauntless Bureau Number 2111 from Marine Scout Bomber Squadron 241 (VMSB-241) which was formed at Midway Atoll on March 1, 1942 as part of Marine Aircraft Group 22 (MAG-22) On June 4, 1942 the Japanese fleet was spotted off Midway and 16 SBD-2s from VSMB-241 were launched to attack the Japanese carriers. The squadron commander was shot down so Richard Fleming and Eugene Card flying Dauntless White 2 took the lead. White 2 pressed on and flying at 400 feet released their bomb on the Hiryu. Card had been wounded but managed to continue shooting. When White 2 landed they counted 179 holes in the aircraft. The aircraft couldn’t be flown until repairs had been made.
Premium Collection 1/32 Scale airplanes Limited Edition features movable rear gun, working dive brakes, rudder & ailerons. Engine cowling can be removed. Optional transparent engine cowling included. The center-mounted bomb can be displayed in a swung position when the model is mounted to a display stand, and the main landing gear is hinged, allowing for easy gear configurations.
