The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. It was the first such American jet fighter with twin tails. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program. The F-14 was the first of the American Teen Series fighters, which were designed incorporating air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names.
VF-74, Fighter Squadron 74, “Be-Devilers” was an aviation unit of the United States Navy in service from 1944 to 1994. Originally established as VBF-20 on 16 April 1945, it was redesignated as VF-10A on 15 November 1946, redesignated as VF-92 on 12 August 1948, redesignated as VF-74 on 15 January 1950 and disestablished on 30 April 1994. It was the third US Navy squadron to be designated as VF-74.
In February 1983 they began the transition to the F-14 Tomcat. After the transition VF-74 conducted numerous deployments including support of Operation Desert Storm and Shield. The final deployment was in 1992, during which the squadron supported United Nations efforts in Yugoslavia. Upon their return in 1993, they transitioned to an aggressor role, collaborating with various Navy and Air Force units. Aggressor aircraft emulate tactics and capabilities of potential adversaries, with VF-74's Tomcats painted in Su-27-style camouflage for training purposes, each sporting slight variations. The F-14B proved highly effective in this role, mirroring capabilities akin to the Su-27 and MiG-31. After 50 years of commendable service, VF-74 was officially disbanded on April 30, 1994.
