The C-130 E variant named “Spare 617” was involved in on of the braves acts during the Vietnam War. During the siege of An Loc in 1972, the C-130 sustained catastrophic damage under heavy fire while attempting to airdrop supplies to South Vietnamese forces. Capt. William Caldwell and loadmaster Charlie Shaub received the Air Force Cross for their heroic actions that saved the rest of the crew and got their aircraft back to safety. “Spare 617” is currently on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio.
