The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters. The fifth-generation combat aircraft is designed to perform ground-attack and air-superiority missions. It has three main models: the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier-based catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) variant
Compared to the F-35A, the F-35C carrier variant features larger wings with foldable wingtip sections, larger wing and tail control surfaces for improved low-speed control, stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier arrested landings, a twin-wheel nose gear, and a stronger tailhook for use with carrier arrestor cables. The larger wing area allows for decreased landing speed while increasing both range and payload.
This Hobby Master model represents F-35C VW434 (Bureau Number 169601) from VMFA-314 “Black Knights” based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, CA. Created as VMF-314 in 1943 the squadron was known as the “Bob Cats”. In 1957 they became VMF(AW)-314 “Black Knights” but in 1961 they became VMFA-314 and were the first USMC unit to equip with the F-4B. 2019 saw the “Black Knights” begin to transition to the F-35C and once again were the first USMC unit to fly new aircraft types. F-35C 169601 was the first aircraft to receive VMFA-314 markings and was on display at Tinker AFB air show in June 2019.
As with most Hobby Master models, this F-35C features engraved panel lines, antennas, surface details and pad printed authentic squadron markings. The canopy can be displayed open or closed and reveals a well-appointed cockpit (with instrumentation details). The model also comes with weapons complement, optional-position landing gear and a display stand.
