In August 1990, Marine Attack Squadron 311 (VMA-311), known as the "Tomcats," was fully equipped with the AV-8B Harrier II, a versatile V/STOL jet that had significantly enhanced the squadron’s operational capabilities. This period marked a critical phase for VMA-311 as they prepared for their imminent deployment in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, an event that triggered Operation Desert Shield. The squadron's primary mission was to provide close air support for Marine ground forces, a role that the AV-8B Harrier II was particularly well-suited for due to its ability to operate from forward, austere bases and deliver precision strikes. Throughout August, VMA-311 engaged in rigorous training exercises to ensure combat readiness, integrating operations with other Marine units and participating in joint exercises with U.S. Navy and allied forces. The squadron's deployment to the Middle East was part of the larger U.S. military build-up aimed at deterring further Iraqi aggression and preparing for potential conflict, which would eventually lead to Operation Desert Storm. The preparations and activities of VMA-311 during this time underscored their critical role in the Marine Corps’ air-ground task force, showcasing their readiness and the enhanced capabilities of the AV-8B Harrier II in a rapidly evolving military situation.
The AV-8B Harrier II, 1990, was a cutting-edge Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) aircraft designed for the United States Marine Corps. This second-generation Harrier featured significant upgrades over its predecessor, including a more powerful Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine, which provided improved thrust and maneuverability. The aircraft was equipped with advanced avionics, including a digital fly-by-wire system, a Head-Up Display (HUD), and an Inertial Navigation System (INS), enhancing its precision and ease of control. The AV-8B's combat capabilities were bolstered by its ability to carry a diverse array of weaponry, including AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missiles, a variety of bombs, and a 25mm GAU-12/U cannon. Its robust airframe allowed for operations from austere forward bases and amphibious assault ships, making it an essential asset for close air support, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance missions. The combination of V/STOL capability, advanced avionics, and versatile armament made the AV-8B Harrier II a formidable and flexible platform in the Marine Corps' aviation arsenal during this period.
This Hobby Master model is a replica of AV-8B Harrier II Bureau Number 163517 from VMA-311 while deployed to King Abdul Aziz Base, August 1990.
As with most Hobby Master models this AV-8B Harrier, features engraved panel lines, antennas, surface details an opening canopy, a well-appointed cockpit (with instrumentation details), pilot figures, full weapons complement, optional-position landing gear, authentic squadron markings, and a display stand.
