Zulus At Isandlwana 1/32 (54 mm) Scale Model Plastic Figures

Lord Chelmford, arrived in South Africa in March 1878 with the 2^nd Battalion 24^th Regiment of Foot, mostly raw recruits, whose sister battalion had been campaigning in the Kaffir Wars since 1874. By September he had persuaded the High Commissioner for Southern Africa Sir Henry Frere to apply to the home government for more troops, and his plans for an invasion of Zululand were well advanced.  Cetshwayo meanwhile had no idea of the intentions of even the fears of the British.  His army was large, perhaps 20,000 men in all, and many were untried youngsters of recent intangas (age groupings).

A great many were also unmarried because of the general tradition established by Shaka that ikhehla could be conferred as a reward for the prowess in battle and there had been no battles for years.  They had a strong motive for wanting conflict, and indunas would experience no difficulty in calling the nation to arms.
