The Panther tank, officially Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (abbreviated PzKpfw V) with ordnance inventory designation: Sd.Kfz. 171, is a German medium tank of World War II. It was used on the Eastern and Western Fronts from mid-1943 to the end of the war in May 1945.. It was designed to counter the Soviet T-34 and replace the Panzer III and IV. In 1944, it underwent a name change to PzKpfw Panther, reflecting a streamlined designation after Hitler's directive to remove the Roman numeral "V."
The Panther stood out with its Maybach V12 engine, similar to the Tiger I but offering enhanced gun penetration, speed, and agility. It served alongside the Panzer IV and Tiger I, striking a balance between firepower, protection, and mobility. Despite its effectiveness in open-country engagements, the Panther had trade-offs like weaker side armor and a less potent high-explosive shell.
Deployed hastily at the Battle of Kursk, the Panther faced initial technical challenges, but design flaws were addressed by late 1943. Production variants included the Panther "D" (Ausf. D), "A," and "G," showcasing its evolving capabilities. Weighing 44.8 metric tons, the Panther's logistical challenges were offset by its high power-to-weight ratio, offering remarkable mobility on the battlefield.
