Atlantis (OV-104) is the fourth NASA shuttle to make a space flight. It was one of the five reusable shuttles used to transport people and equipment into Earth orbit. The first flight took place on October 3, 1985. In 26 years of service, Atlantis undertook 33 missions and spent 306 days in orbit around the Earth. With the landing of the shuttle on July 21, 2011 after a successful mission to resupply the International Space Station, the era of the space shuttle ended. After retirement, Atlantis was transported to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where it now serves as a museum.
The Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits near Earth, is named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble. The telescope was launched into orbit on April 24, 1990 by the Space Shuttle Discovery. Since its inception, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy, providing an incredible amount of data. The Space Shuttle Atlantis serviced the Hubble Telescope during the STS-125 mission in 2009. During the mission, new instruments were delivered and the necessary repairs were made.
