This Expeditionary Force boxed set of 5 unpainted and unassembled 60 mm plastic model figures from the “Wars of the Roman Empire” collection and is representative of Mounted Auxiliaries (Cohors Equitata)
The Early Imperial Roman auxiliary cohors equitata was a mixed unit consisting of infantry and cavalry. This type of cohort was distinct for its inclusion of both foot soldiers and mounted troops within a single unit. The infantry component typically comprised Roman citizens or peregrini, free provincial subjects, while the cavalry contingent was often drawn from non-citizen populations, especially from regions outside Roman control.
The cohors equitata played a crucial role in supporting the Roman legions, providing additional flexibility and mobility on the battlefield. Equipped with a diverse array of soldiers, these cohorts were versatile and adaptable to various military scenarios. They were frequently deployed in auxiliary roles across the provinces of the Roman Empire, aiding in maintaining security, conducting patrols, and participating in combat operations alongside the legions. This early form of auxiliary cohors equitata laid the groundwork for the later development of standardized auxiliary units with more specialized roles within the Roman military structure.
