Based on the A-6 Intruder the Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler primary mission is to support strike aircraft and ground forces by interrupting enemy electronics and gathering tactical intelligence. The aircraft carries 4-crew and is in service with the USN and USMC. The first USN EA-6B was retired on June 10, 2011 and the last carrier deployment by an EA-6B took place on November 14, 2014. The USN has replaced the EA-6B with the Boeing EA-18G Growler.
Established on October 1, 1985, the US Navy Electronic Attack Squadron 140, known as VAQ-140 Patriots, was immediately assigned the critical mission of evaluating and testing the AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM). Notably, it achieved the distinction of becoming the first Prowler squadron to operationally deploy with HARM aboard USS John F. Kennedy in August 1986. The squadron played a significant role in Operation Desert Shield, deploying aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in September 1991, and subsequently participated in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf. Commencing on October 3, the Patriots and their EA-6Bs initiated the first of five deployments on USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
