Benelli was established in Pesaro, Italy in 1911, which possibly makes it the oldest of all European motorcycle factories in operation. Benelli started as a family business started by widower Teres Benelli with the help of her 6 sons. The business grew up until World War II where it temporarily shut down until 1949 due to war time destruction. During the 1960’s the company was struggling to compete with Japanese motorcycles and was eventually acquire by Alejandro de Tomaso from Argentina. The Benelli brand encountered numerous ups and downs and changes in owner ship during the 1980s and 1990’s. In 2005 Benelli became part of the Qjian Jiang (QJ) group, the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in China.
