The Korean War (1950-1953) was a significant conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, backed by the United Nations, primarily the United States. It began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Key battles included the Battle of Pusan Perimeter, where UN forces held off North Korean advances; the Inchon Landing, a surprise amphibious assault that led to the recapture of Seoul; the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, where UN troops managed a strategic withdrawal despite being encircled by Chinese forces; the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge, marked by intense combat in North Korea's mountains; and the Battle of Pork Chop Hill, a series of fierce engagements near the war's end. The conflict culminated in an armistice on July 27, 1953, establishing the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) but not a formal peace treaty. The war resulted in a stalemate, leaving Korea divided along the 38th parallel, a division that persists today, and had lasting impacts on the Cold War geopolitical landscape.
