This Hasegawa 1/48 Scale model kit is a great recreation of the Macross Plus VF-19. With a manageable number of components, this model offers a quick assembly process, allowing enthusiasts to focus on the intricate art of painting. The versatility extends to the main wing, which can seamlessly shift between a standard state and a high-speed form. Notably, the head beam cannon and vector nozzle exhibit adjustable mobility, adding a dynamic touch to the design. The cockpit configuration is customizable, offering a choice between a single-seat and double-seat layout. A detailed seated pilot is included, enhancing the realism of the model. For added authenticity, the canopy can be easily opened or closed. Furthermore, the package illustration is masterfully crafted by Hidetaka Tenjin, showcasing his artistic expertise.
Macross Plus serves as the inaugural official sequel to the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series, positioned in the canon timeline. Unlike Macross II, which was retconned as a parallel world story, Macross Plus pioneered the fusion of traditional cel and computer-generated animation, setting the stage for increased use of CGI in subsequent Macross releases like Macross Zero.
Set three decades after the human-Zentradi conflict, the story unfolds in January 2040 on the colony planet Eden. The United Nations Government conducts tests for transforming fighter aircraft, featuring military test pilots Isamu Alva Dyson and Zentradi-mixed Guld Goa Bowman. Tasked with piloting new aircraft for Project Super Nova (Shinsei Industries' YF-19 and General Galaxy's YF-21), their personal animosities disrupt the tests and jeopardize the program, intended to select the VF-11 Thunderbolt's successor in the U.N. Spacy military forces. The YF-19 would eventually win the competition and become the YF-19 Excalibur.
The YF-19, designed to meet the operational needs of the UNAF/UNS, introduced several groundbreaking technologies that set the standard for next-generation variable fighters. Notable features included an active stealth system, an anti-projectile shield, an optional fold booster for interstellar travel, and a fighter-scale pin-point barrier system. The latter enveloped portions of the variable fighter in a movable energy barrier, effectively intercepting and neutralizing incoming fire. Powered by Shinnakasu thermonuclear engines, the YF-19 achieved unparalleled thrust, enabling it to reach orbital velocity over an Earth-class planet without assistance.
