In May 1941, the German Waffenamt ordered the design of the VK4501(H), later known as the PzKpfw VI Ausf. E, just one month before the launch of Operation Barbarossa.
Henschel und Sohn of Kassel was tasked with building the heavily armored chassis, while Krupp, Germany's largest munitions manufacturer, was responsible for developing the turret.

The PzKpfw VI Ausf. E, one of the first German tanks to feature a torsion bar suspension with eight interleaved wheels, was designed to support the massive 57-ton weight. It was equipped with an 8.8cm KwK36 L/56 cannon and two MG34 machine guns for close support against enemy infantry. By the end of the war, 1,354 of these tanks had been produced, some coming off the Wegmann assembly line.

This Motor City Classics 1/43 scale model replicates PzKpfw VI  Tiger I Ausf. E Heavy Tank “312” from schwere Panzer-Abteilung (Heavy Tank Battalion)  505 Poland, 1944.
