The Duchy of Warsaw, also referred to as the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and Napoleonic Poland, emerged as a French client state in 1807 under Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars. Initially composed of Polish territories relinquished to France by Prussia according to the Treaties of Tilsit, it expanded in 1809 with additional land from Austria per the Treaty of Schönbrunn. This endeavor marked the initial effort to restore Polish sovereignty following the partitions of the 18th century, encompassing central and southeastern regions of modern-day Poland.
Under a personal union, Frederick Augustus I of Saxony, Napoleon's ally, assumed the title of Duke of Warsaw, maintaining his claim to the Polish throne. However, after Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign, the duchy was effectively abandoned, falling under Prussian and Russian occupation until the Congress of Vienna in 1815. There, it was formally split between Prussia and Russia, with the eastern portion becoming Congress Poland under Russian rule and the western part forming the Grand Duchy of Posen under Prussian control. Kraków, a cultural hub, retained "free city" status until its incorporation into Austria in 1846.
