The Boeing AH-64 Apache, an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter, boasts a tandem cockpit for two crew members and a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision. Armed with a 30 mm M230 chain gun and four hardpoints for missiles and rockets, the AH-64 prioritizes combat survivability with its redundant systems. Developed from the Model 77 for the US Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program, the AH-64 saw its first flight in 1975 and entered full production in 1982 under McDonnell Douglas, later Boeing Defense, Space & Security. Its upgraded variant, the AH-64D Apache Longbow, introduced in 1997, features a glass cockpit and advanced sensors, including the AN/APG-78 Longbow millimeter-wave fire-control radar.
The AH-64 Apache serves as the primary attack helicopter for the US Army and various other nations like Greece, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. It has seen action in conflicts worldwide, from the Persian Gulf to Afghanistan and Iraq. Equipped with the AN/APG-78 radar, it can track multiple targets simultaneously and engage up to 16 at once, with the ability to initiate an attack within 30 seconds. Its integrated radio modem facilitates data sharing among ground units and other Apaches, enhancing coordination and effectiveness in combat scenarios.
