The Bismarck was the flag ship of the German Navy. It was the largest WWII German warship with a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2092 men. Put into service in August 1940, she left port in May 1941 for operation “Rhine Exercies”. Together with the Prinz Eugen she was discovered early by British reconnaissance planse. Bismarck sank the British warship Hood in an encounter on May 24, 1941. After a long chase, the Bismarck was hit by an aircraft fired torpedo on May 26 1941 and intercepted by the British battleships King George V and Rodney. Om May 27th the Bismarck was sunk by her own crew 490 km off the French coast.
