The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was Space Transportation System (STS).
The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. In addition to the prototype whose completion was cancelled, five complete Shuttle systems were built and used on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida.
The Space Shuttle Endeavour (OV-105) is named after the first ship commanded by 18th century British explorer James Cook. Orbiter Endeavour first arrived at Kennedy Space Center’s Landing Facility in 1991. The first mission was the STS-49, Intelsat VI repair mission on May 7, 1992. The last mission was STS-134 (May 16 – June 1, 2011) and was the Endeavor’s 25th mission. The Endeavour is now retired and on display at the California Science Center.
