Hailing from Sonora, Mexico, José Murrieta journeyed to California in 1849 with his wife and family, seeking fortune in the gold rush. However, tragedy struck when envious white prospectors massacred his loved ones, igniting a swift and brutal quest for vengeance that became the stuff of legend. His story spread through newspapers and dime novels, capturing the imagination of the frontier. Forced to flee, Murrieta rode with outlaw gangs and was rumored to be the last surviving member of a notorious band of horse rustlers, relentlessly pursued by the Texas Rangers.
