The Douglas SBD Dauntless is a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy's main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The type earned its nickname "Slow But Deadly" (from its SBD initials) during this period.
This Hobby Master model is a replica of the US Navy SBD-2 Dauntless based on-board USS Enterprise flown by Commander Howard Young on December 7th 1941. LCDR Howard Young, Commander Enterprise Group, USS Enterprise was leading 36 aircraft from the carrier back to Ford Island. Approaching land Young noticed aircraft over MCAS Ewa and thought this was odd for an early Sunday morning. Anti-aircraft explosions were sighted, and an attacking aircraft came into view. Under attack the U.S. aircraft had no chance to become the attackers, so they dove and zigzagged trying to elude the attackers. By the time the American aircraft landed they had lost 6 SBDs, Young’s aircraft survived.
Premium Collection 1/32 Scale airplanes Limited Edition features movable rear gun, working dive brakes, rudder & ailerons. Engine cowling can be removed. Optional transparent engine cowling included. Rotating metal propeller. Sliding canopy. The center-mounted bomb can be displayed in a swung position when the model is mounted to a display stand, and the main landing gear is hinged, allowing for easy gear configurations.
