The Northrop F-5 tactical fighter was designed as an extremely maneuverable, supersonic fighter with a high rate of reliability at a low operating cost. The F-5 first flew on July 30, 1959 with the first customer delivery in 1964. The last of more than 2,600 F-5’s was produced in 1989 and about two-thirds of these are still in service with 26 countries more than 4 decades later. The F-5 was manufactured by Northrop Grumman and under license in Canada, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland.
In January 1968, the British announced the imminent withdrawal of all their troops east of Suez by the end of 1971. Prior to then, Singapore had depended completely on Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) for its air defence, with Britain withdrawing all its forces from Singapore and region by 1971 Singapore had to develop its own air force. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is the air arm of the Singapore Armed Forces. It was first established on 1 September 1968 as the Singapore Air Defence Command (SADC). On 1 April 1975, it was renamed the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
This Hobby Master model represents an F-5S Tiger II #874 from 149 Squadron “Shikira” of the Republic of Singapore Air Force 2008. The squadron is based at Paya Lebar Air Base and goes by the motto "Steadfast" with the Shikra adopted as its mascot. The model is highly detailed with squadron markings, panel lines, pilot figures, the landing gear is optional, one can select to display the landing gear in its extended position or to cover the wheel wells as in the inflight position. Display stand included.
