Originally encountered by Napoleon during his Egyptian Campaign in 1798, these fierce warrior-caste cavalrymen so impressed the future Emperor with their equestrian skill and martial prowess that he formed a dedicated squadron of them within his Chasseurs-à-Cheval. Clad in their traditional Oriental attire—voluminous "saroual" trousers, ornate vests, and colorful turbans—they served as Napoleon's personal bodyguard and participated in nearly every major campaign, most notably distinguishing themselves in the desperate charges at the Battle of Austerlitz.
