Historical Context: The Rus, primarily Swedes from Scandinavia, embarked on eastward ventures during this period. They engaged in fierce conflicts with neighboring Slavic tribes and powerful steppe cultures such as the Pechenegs, Bulgars, and Khazars. Renowned for their martial skill, the Rus served as mercenaries for the Byzantines while also proving to be formidable foes. A notable example is the Battle of Silistria in 972, where they advanced in a disciplined shield-wall formation, spears leveled in unrelenting assault.
Beyond their battlefield achievements, the Rus were skilled seafarers, dominating vital trade routes. This wealth enabled them to acquire a diverse range of arms and armor, heavily influenced by various cultures they encountered. These figures reflect the unique and historically rich identity of the Rus, offering versatility for historical wargaming and dioramas.
This set includes 48 Rus Infantry figures from the 8th-9th centuries, which can also be used to represent the Varangian Guard.
Each of the figures are equipped with a unique array of headgear and helmet designs drawing from Slavic, Asiatic and traditional Scandinavian influences.
Shield Varieties: Accompanying shields range from variously sized round shields to distinctive Slavic rectangular shields. The set provides ample round shields to equip each figure.
Beyond depicting the Rus, these miniatures can double as the famed Varangian Guard of the Byzantine Empire or as Slavic warriors. Combine them with Victrix’s existing Viking set for even greater diversity or transform them into archers using the Victrix Dark Age Archers set and additional Rus-specific components for an array of battlefield roles.
