Description
The Elefant (German for “elephant”) was a formidable heavy Jagdpanzer (tank destroyer) deployed by the German Wehrmacht Panzerjäger forces during World War II. Originally built as the Ferdinand in 1943—named after its designer Ferdinand Porsche—it utilized unused tank hulls from an abandoned Tiger I design in favor of Henschel’s competing model. Ninety-one units were produced, equipped with an 88mm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun, making them lethal against Allied armor.
From January to April 1944, the Ferdinand underwent significant upgrades, including improved armor, a hull-mounted MG 34, and reinforced reliability. Renamed the Elefant in May 1944, its official designation was Panzerjäger Tiger (P), with the ordnance designation Sd.Kfz. 184.
This Motor City Classics 1/43 scale diecast model represents an Elefant from Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 (653rd Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion) during operations in Ukraine, 1944. Featuring a detailed camouflage finish, historically accurate markings, and a labeled display base within a clear presentation case, it’s an essential piece for any WWII military model collection.
