Description
The USS Arizona (BB-39), a Pennsylvania-class “super-dreadnought” battleship, was commissioned in 1916 and named to honor the 48th state’s admission to the Union. While it remained stateside during World War I, it escorted President Woodrow Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference and represented U.S. interests abroad. After modernization in 1929–1931, Arizona joined the Pacific Fleet and took part in disaster relief operations, including aiding victims of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
Relocated to Pearl Harbor in 1940 as a deterrent to Japanese aggression, the Arizona was tragically sunk during the attack on December 7, 1941, when a Japanese bomb ignited a forward magazine, killing 1,177 crew members. The wreck remains beneath the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, serving as a solemn tribute to those lost.
