USS Arizona (BB-39), a Pennsylvania-class "super-dreadnought" battleship, was commissioned in 1916 and named to honor the 48th state's admission to the union. Although it stayed stateside during World War I, Arizona briefly escorted President Woodrow Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference and represented American interests in Turkey in 1919. After transferring to the Pacific Fleet, it underwent a significant modernization from 1929-1931 and participated in training exercises and disaster relief, including aiding survivors of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
Relocated to Pearl Harbor in 1940 as a deterrent to Japanese imperialism, Arizona was attacked on 7 December 1941. A Japanese bomb detonated in a magazine, causing a massive explosion and sinking the ship, resulting in 1,177 casualties. Unlike other damaged vessels, Arizona was beyond repair. The wreck remains at Pearl Harbor beneath the USS Arizona Memorial, dedicated on 30 May 1962 to honor those who died in the attack.
This Motor City Classics Legendary Battleship 1/250 scale model replicates USS Arizona when the ship was launched in 1915.
