The USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is a South Dakota-class battleship built for the U.S. Navy in the late 1930s. Designed under the Washington treaty's escalator clause, it features 16-inch guns but maintains a displacement close to the 35,000-ton limit. Cramped due to heavy armor and increased anti-aircraft batteries during wartime, it supported Operation Torch in 1942, neutralizing the French battleship Jean Bart, then shifted to the Pacific for key operations against Japan, including the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and the Battle of Okinawa.
Post-war, Massachusetts was decommissioned in 1947 and placed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1962, she was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and transferred to the Massachusetts Memorial Committee in 1965. Preserved as a museum ship at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, she remains in her wartime configuration, with some material removed in the 1980s to reactivate the Iowa-class battleships.
This Motor City Classics Legendary Battleship 1/250 scale model replicates USS Massachusetts (BB-59) from 1941.
