The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most formidable American fighters of its era. Originally deployed by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in 1944, the Corsair gained a fierce reputation in the Pacific Theater with an 11:1 kill ratio and exceptional performance in air-to-air combat and ground attacks. Though initially challenged by carrier landing issues, it thrived as a land-based fighter-bomber, especially with the U.S. Marines. Serving multiple allied nations, the Corsair remained in military use until the 1960s. Its production run from 1942 to 1953—spanning 12,571 aircraft across 16 variants—was the longest of any U.S. piston-engine fighter.
