The Wargames Atlantic Dark Ages Army Builder is a 28mm scale hard plastic miniature kit featuring 48 multi-part figures designed for historical tabletop wargaming. Released as part of the Decline and Fall collection (Imperial Rome At War 284–476 AD), this massive army builder box set provides unarmored warriors, versatile spear and sword armaments, round shields, and headgear options to field diverse warbands and levies molded in gray plastic.
The Clashing Warbands of the Migration Era
THE PERFECT WAY TO BUILD MANY DARK AGES ARMIES… Call the fyrd! Assemble your legions! Invade Rome from the east! Dominate Gaul! Defend Britain! The possibilities are endless with this incredibly versatile ARMY BUILDER set.
From the Rhine frontier to the shores of sub-Roman Britain, the collapse of imperial hegemony gave rise to fierce warlords, migratory hosts, and desperate city garrisons. Whether defending provincial settlements against invading raiders or marching in tribal coalitions to sack imperial capitals, unarmored levies and levy warriors formed the backbone of every shield wall. This set provides the core rank-and-file masses needed to recreate the brutal conflicts of the 3rd through 5th centuries AD and beyond.
Hobbyist Versatility & Historical Customization
Sculpted by Rob Macfarlane, with box art illustration by Marco Capparoni and display painting by Matthew Leahy, this army builder box set delivers maximum versatility. The kit features dedicated sprues for bodies, weapon arms, and round shields, allowing hobbyists to assemble up to 48 individual warriors armed with thrusting spears, throwing spears, hand axes, seaxes, and swords. An enormous selection of head options covers distinct cultural styles—including Goths, Saxons, Franks, Late Romans, Britons, and later Dark Ages Vikings with spangenhelm helmets. Fully designed to mix and match with the entire Decline and Fall range, it pairs seamlessly with Late Roman Legionaries (WAALR001 / WAALR005) or Goth Warriors (WAALR002) for command elements.
From this box, you can build:
- Unarmored Late Roman Auxilia or Limitanei with spangenhelm helmets, spears, and oval/round shields
- Gothic tribal warriors charging with double-edged spathas, spears, and wood-boss shields
- Saxon and Anglo-Saxon fyrd levies armed with single-edged seaxes, axes, and round shields
- Frankish warband warriors equipped with the iconic Suebian topknot hairstyle and throwing axes
- Romano-British militia defending Celtic borderlands with round shields and thrusting spears
Tip: For authentic Dark Ages tunics, paint clothing in unbleached linen, earthy greens, dull madders, and ochres, reserving vibrant blues and purples for tribal nobility or Roman officers. Adding wood grain lines and chipping on shield faces elevates the rugged realism of your front rank.
