Officially introduced at the Camps of Boulogne and formalized by decree in April 1806, the greatcoat became an indispensable part of the French soldier's equipment. While initially intended for sentry duty or cold weather, it soon became a permanent sight on the battlefields of Europe, often becoming the only element of uniform newly raised recruits received following the Russian campaign.
