The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). The B-17 was primarily employed by the USAAC in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy were the primary major commands responsible for employing the B-17 in Europe.
This Air Force 1 model is a replica of B-17G “Swamp Fire”(Serial # 42-32024, Fuselage Code - WA, Aircraft Code – L) from the 524th Bombardment Squadron, 379th Bomb Group (Heavy), 41st Combat Bombardment Wing, of the 1st Bombardment Division, and was based at RAF Kimbolton, England during WW II. The combat record of the 379th was the most successful of all the Eighth Air Force heavy bomber groups. It held records as far as bomb tonnage dropped – 26,459 tons – more than any other unit including those operational before the 379th arrived in the UK. It also exceeded all other UK Bomb Groups in the total number of missions flown, carrying out 330 between May 1943 and 15 May 1945.
‘Swamp Fire’ was the first Heavy Bomber to reach 100 Missions (1 November 1944). And a total of 117 combat missions before returned to USA.
This model is made by Air Force One under the brand name of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
