The Northrop P-61 Black Widow, named for the North American spider, was the first operational U.S. warplane designed as a night fighter, and the first aircraft designed to use radar. The P-61 had a crew of three: pilot, gunner, and radar operator. It was armed with four 20 mm (.79 in) Hispano M2 forward-firing cannon mounted in the lower fuselage, and four .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns mounted in a remote-controlled dorsal gun turret.
The P-61 Black Widow was introduced by Northrop in 1944. Though it first saw combat duty in Europe, the Black Widow had its greatest success helping the Allies secure victory against the Japanese the following year.
This model represents the P-61B “Lady In The Dark” , tail number 239408, piloted by Maj Lee Kendall of the 548th Night Fighter Squadron. On the night of August 15, 1945, “Lady In The Dark” had the distinction of the last aerial victory (uncredited) of World War II when it chased a Japanese Ki-44 “Tojo” that crashed while trying to evade.
This collection of models is made by Air Force 1 under the brand name of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. This Black Widow model has its landing gear extended permanently. The wheels on the landing gear do not turn.
