Operated by the U.S. Air Force, the SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed as a black project in the 1960s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. It performed at high speeds and altitudes to outrace enemies during aerial combat, and was also able to detect and avoid ground missile attacks.
This model represents bureau number (BUNO) “61-7972” flown by Lt. Col. Raymond E. "Ed" Yielding and Lt. Col. Joseph T. "JT" Vida in March 6th 1990. This was intended to be the last flight of an SR-71 and it flew from Palmdale, CA to Dulles Airport. The aircraft displays the Skunk Works insignia on it’s rudders.
The wheels of the landing gear are extended permanently and do not roll. The model comes with an all metal display stand that needs minor assembly.
