The SBD-5 Dauntless, an evolution of the Douglas SBD (Scout Bomber Douglas) series, was a carrier-capable dive bomber and scout plane used primarily by the U.S. Navy during World War II. By 1944, the SBD-5 featured several enhancements over its predecessors, improving its performance and reliability in combat. It was powered by a Wright R-1820-60 radial engine producing 1,200 horsepower, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of approximately 255 mph (410 km/h). The aircraft had a range of 1,115 miles (1,795 km) and could operate at a service ceiling of around 25,530 feet (7,780 meters).
This Hobby Master model of the US Navy SBD-5 Dauntless, representing the aircraft flown by Lt. Cook “Cookie” Cleland and rear gunner W.J. Hister, holds significant historical value as it commemorates a pivotal period during World War II. Cleland and Hister's SBD-5, marked as "White 39," was stationed aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16), one of the most prominent aircraft carriers in the Pacific Fleet. The model depicts the aircraft during June 1944, a time when the USS Lexington played a crucial role in key battles, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea, known as the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.” This battle was critical for the U.S. Navy's push to weaken Japanese air power and secure air superiority in the Pacific.
Hobby Master's 1:32 scale SBD Dauntless model is an impressive piece loaded with intricate features. The cockpit interior stands out for its exceptional detail, showcasing a precisely replicated instrument panel, realistic flight controls, and well-crafted side-mounted equipment and control panels. The metal propeller is free-spinning and detachable, allowing the cowling to be removed to reveal the finely detailed Wright R-1820 radial engine underneath. The model boasts fully movable control surfaces, and the speed brakes can be fully deployed, simulating a dive-bombing position. Additionally, the center-mounted bomb can be shown in a swung-out position when displayed on the stand, and the hinged main landing gear offers flexibility for varied gear configurations.
