The SBD-5 Dauntless, an evolution of the Douglas SBD (Scout Bomber Douglas) series, was a carrier-capable dive bomber and scout plane used primarily by the U.S. Navy during World War II. By 1944, the SBD-5 featured several enhancements over its predecessors, improving its performance and reliability in combat. It was powered by a Wright R-1820-60 radial engine producing 1,200 horsepower, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of approximately 255 mph (410 km/h). The aircraft had a range of 1,115 miles (1,795 km) and could operate at a service ceiling of around 25,530 feet (7,780 meters).
This Hobby Master model of the US Navy SBD-5 Dauntless, marked as "White 45" aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16) in 1943, commemorates a significant period in World War II history. The USS Lexington, known as "The Blue Ghost," was vital to the Pacific Fleet, representing American naval power and resilience. Between September 1943 and June 1944, Bombing Squadron 16 (VB-16) operated from the Lexington, participating in key raids on the Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, and Wake. A major mission on December 4, 1943, saw VB-16 take part in a large-scale raid on Kwajalein Atoll to weaken Japanese defenses before the planned invasion in early 1944.
The SBD-5 Dauntless, recognized for its precision dive-bombing abilities, played an essential role in these operations. This model features the updated paint scheme introduced in June 1943, which included a tricolor national insignia with a red surround and false gun ports on the wing leading edges to deceive enemy pilots. This detail, combined with Dauntless’ s renowned capabilities, captures the authenticity and strategic adaptations of the era. The model stands as a tribute to the skill and bravery of the crews who undertook these pivotal missions, offering collectors and history enthusiasts a piece that honors the U.S. Navy’s strategic advances in the Pacific.
Hobby Master's 1:32 scale SBD Dauntless model is an impressive piece loaded with intricate features. The cockpit interior stands out for its exceptional detail, showcasing a precisely replicated instrument panel, realistic flight controls, and well-crafted side-mounted equipment and control panels. The metal propeller is free-spinning and detachable, allowing the cowling to be removed to reveal the finely detailed Wright R-1820 radial engine underneath. The model boasts fully movable control surfaces, and the speed brakes can be fully deployed, simulating a dive-bombing position. Additionally, the center-mounted bomb can be shown in a swung-out position when displayed on the stand, and the hinged main landing gear offers flexibility for varied gear configurations.
