Set in 2008 A.D., one year before the original Macross series, Macross Zero portrays the concluding battles of the U.N. Wars between the U.N. Spacy and Anti-UN forces. Taking place in the South Pacific, where a massive alien spaceship crashed nine years earlier, the series follows U.N. Spacy F-14 KAI pilot Shin Kudo. During a confrontation, he encounters a unique enemy aircraft capable of transforming into a robot. After crash landing on Mayan Island, Shin discovers a profound connection between the peaceful native inhabitants, the alien spaceship, and the unfolding war. Returning to his carrier fleet, Shin joins the Skull Squadron, operating cutting-edge transforming fighters called the VF-0 Phoenix. The conflict intensifies as both sides vie for control of alien artifacts, with the serene Mayan people caught in the crossfire.
The VF-0S Phoenix and the VF-0A Phoenix “Angel” are variable fighters that appears in the Macross Zero OVA
Similar to the VF-1 Valkyrie that succeeded it, the VF-0 series was designed with various equipment packages to enhance its capabilities for specific missions. Unfortunately, the initially deployed "Super Pack" included only conformal fuel tanks/missile packs. When the need arose for heavy weaponry and increased fuel supply (dubbed the Anti-"Bird Man" battle), the Asuka carrier crew improvised a modification using available parts.
Originally named VF-0 "Raid," it was later rebranded as "Angel," likely inspired by its distinctive appearance after modification. When equipped with the QF-2200D-B Ghost fighter, the VF-0's weight increased by around 35%, while the total thrust of the combined VF/Ghost rose by less than 20%. However, the afterburner thrust saw a significant 90% increase, leading to a notable boost in maximum acceleration.
To quickly modify the VF-0 series, the Asuka crew relied on virtual simulations to generate flight data for the VF-0 "Angel." The alterations, including added munitions and the impact of the QF-2200D-B Ghost's main wing on the VF-0's main wing airflow, introduced complexities in the flight characteristics. The self-learning combat maneuver computer had to acquire and analyze data during flight, leaving gaps in the control scheme. Combined with the dynamic nature of the Battroid mode, the VF-0A "Angel" heavily depended on the pilot's skills in actual combat.
The Special Attack/Assault Specification was applied to one VF-0A and one VF-0S, utilized in the late 2008 battle at the island of Mayan by U.N.G. pilots Shin Kudo and Roy Focker. The chief mechanic Raizou Nakajima supervised the equipment installation and final checks for both units.
This Hasegawa 1/72 Scale model kit is a great recreation of the Macross Zero VF-0 Phoenix and the QF-2200D-B Ghost. The kit includes markings for either the VF-0A or VF-0S.
