The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation. First flight of the Mustang was on October 26th 1940 and introduced into service in January 1942. The official last year of service was 1984 with the Dominican Air Force. Over 15,000 Mustangs were produced.
The 2nd FS as the 2nd Pursuit Squadron and later renamed the 2nd FS was assigned to the 52nd FG. The unit was sent to England as part of the 8th Air Force and in 1943 was equipped with Spitfires to escort bombers. Desperate for fighters in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations the 52nd FG / 2nd FS were sent to fill the need. In April 1944 the Spitfires were replaced by P-51 Mustangs. One pilot was Captain Fred Ohr credited with 6 victories, 1 in a Spitfire and 5 in his Mustang 44-13298 "Marie".
On 24 March 1945, the 52nd FG aircraft flew the longest escort mission ever flown in Europe—1600 miles round-trip to Berlin. By the end of the war, the group's Mustangs had adopted yellow markings that covered the entire tail of the aircraft, earning them the nickname of "Yellow Tails. The 52nd returned to the US in August 1945 and was inactivated on 7 November 1945.
This model represents the Mustang “Marie” (BUNO #44-13209) flown by Capt. Freddie Ohr of the 2nd FS 52nd FG in 1944.
As with most Hobby Master models this P-51D features engraved panel lines, antennas, surface details an opening canopy, a well-appointed cockpit, full weapons complement, optional-position landing gear, authentic squadron markings, and a display stand.
