The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed "Huey") is a utility military helicopter powered by a single turboshaft engine, with two-blade main and tail rotors. The first member of the prolific Huey family, it was developed by Bell Helicopter to meet a United States Army's 1952 requirement for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter, and first flew on October 22, 1956.
The UH-1 was the first turbine-powered helicopter to enter production in 1960 for the United States military. Bell Helicopter built 10,005 Hueys from 1957 to 1975. Records show that 7,013 Hueys served in the Vietnam War of which 1,925 were lost in combat and an additional 1,380 were lost due to operational accidents.
More than 16,000 Hueys have been built since the start of production. The Huey helicopter family of many variants continues to fly to this day in both military and civilian service around the world.
The 116th WASP (Women Army Service Pilots) Platoon was a unique unit of female pilots who flew UH-1 Huey helicopters in support of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. The platoon was formed in September 1965 and operated out of Vung Tau, Vietnam.
The WASPs of the 116th were trained to fly UH-1 Hueys and were responsible for ferrying personnel and equipment throughout the country. They flew medical evacuation missions, resupplied troops, and transported dignitaries, among other tasks.
The WASPs faced numerous challenges in Vietnam, including hazardous flying conditions and discrimination from some male soldiers who believed that women had no place in combat. Nevertheless, the WASPs of the 116th persevered and gained the respect of their fellow soldiers through their dedication and skill.
The 116th WASP Platoon was disbanded in 1973, after the Vietnam War ended. However, the women of the 116th paved the way for future generations of female pilots in the military, and their contributions to the war effort have been recognized through various honors and awards.
