The Tiger I was a German heavy tank of World War II that operated beginning in 1942 in Africa and in the Soviet Union, usually in independent heavy tank battalions. It gave the German Army its first armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun (derived from the 8.8 cm Flak 36). 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944.
This Waterson’s Forces Of Valor model is a replica of early production Tiger I #100 from the 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion serving on the Eastern Front February 1943. The Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502 was formed 25 May 1942. On 23 July Hitler ordered that the first Tiger I tanks be sent to the Leningrad Front. The 502nd became the first unit to receive Tiger I’s when on 19 and 20 August 1942 four Tiger Is were sent to the unit, which only partially equipped one company (German regulations called for a heavy tank battalion of three companies, with 45 tanks in total). On 29 August 1942 the 502nd arrived at the Leningrad Front. The battalion participated in engagements on the Eastern Front during 1943 and 1944.
