The Boeing P-8 Poseidon, developed and manufactured by Boeing Defense, Space & Security, is an American maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft derived from the civilian Boeing 737-800. Initially designed for the United States Navy (USN), this versatile aircraft is engaged in anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
Equipped with an array of weaponry, including torpedoes and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, the P-8 can also deploy and monitor sonobuoys. Its collaborative capabilities extend to working in tandem with other assets, such as the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton maritime surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Beyond the United States Navy, the P-8 is utilized by various international forces, including the Indian Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force, the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, the Royal Norwegian Air Force, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Additionally, orders have been placed by the Republic of Korea Navy and the German Navy. In November 2023, the Royal Canadian Air Force announced its intent to acquire 14 P-8 aircraft with an option for an additional 2.
