This Expeditionary Force boxed set of 9 unpainted and unassembled 60 mm plastic model figures from the “Wars of the Roman Empire” collection and is representative of Roman legionaries of Legio II (Augusta)
Legio II Augusta, or the Second Legion "Augustus'," was a prominent legion in the Imperial Roman army. It was established by Augustus around 43 BCE, following the consolidation of power after the fall of the Roman Republic. The legion played a significant role in the Roman conquest of Britain, participating in Emperor Claudius's invasion in 43 CE under the command of Aulus Plautius. It was instrumental in campaigns across southern Britain, establishing a stronghold in Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum).
Throughout its history, Legio II Augusta was involved in various military operations, including the suppression of Boudica's revolt in 60/61 CE and later conflicts in Germania and on the Danube frontier. The legion was stationed at numerous locations over time, including Germany and Gaul, reflecting the shifting priorities of Roman military strategy.
By the early 3rd century CE, the legion was stationed at Caerleon (Isca Augusta) in Wales, where it remained a crucial military presence. Its emblem was the Capricorn, reflecting its auspices under Augustus. Legio II Augusta continued to serve the Roman Empire until the late 4th or early 5th century, when the legions were gradually withdrawn from Britain as the Western Roman Empire faced increasing internal strife and external threats.
