This Expeditionary Force boxed set of 9 unpainted and unassembled 60 mm plastic model figures from the “Wars of the Roman Empire” collection and is representative of Roman legionaries of Legio IX (Hispana)
Legio IX Hispana, also known as the Ninth Legion "Spanish," was a distinguished legion in the Imperial Roman army. It was likely founded by Pompey around 65 BCE and later reconstituted by Augustus following the end of the Roman Republic. The legion earned its title "Hispana" after campaigning in Hispania (modern-day Spain).
Legio IX Hispana played a significant role in the Roman conquest of Britain, taking part in Emperor Claudius's invasion in 43 CE. Under the command of Aulus Plautius, the legion helped establish Roman control over southern Britain and participated in campaigns against various British tribes. The legion was involved in the suppression of Boudica's revolt in 60/61 CE.
The legion's history is somewhat mysterious after this period. By the early 2nd century, Legio IX Hispana was stationed at Eboracum (modern York) in northern Britain. However, it appears to have disappeared from the historical record by the mid-2nd century. The exact fate of Legio IX Hispana remains uncertain, with theories suggesting it may have been destroyed in a conflict in Britain, transferred to another part of the empire, or disbanded.
Despite the mystery surrounding its end, Legio IX Hispana remains one of the most intriguing legions of the Roman army, noted for its contributions to the Roman military efforts in Britain and its enigmatic disappearance.
