The German army decided to develop a heavy tank to compete with the Soviet medium tank T34/76 and heavy tank KV-1A. In 1941, under the orders of Toller, the Wehrmacht ordered two companies, Henschel and Porsche, to develop new tanks. Both companies used the Flak 18, an anti-aircraft gun developed by Krupp, and a prototype model was created that was equipped with a horseshoe-shaped turret and an 88mm tank gun type 36. The prototype types were called VK4501(P) and VK4501(H), respectively. In April 1942, a test competition was held in the presence of Hitler, and Henschel's plan was adopted and production orders were given. This was given the formal weapon number Sd.Kfz181 and was formalized as his No. 6 heavy tank Daiger IE. Mass production of the Tiger I type began in earnest in July 1942, and in August 1944 it was completely replaced by its successor, the King Tiger, and 1,346 tanks were produced before production of the Tiger I was discontinued.
