During the Crusade era, the Spanish Reconquista unfolded as a prolonged conflict between Christian kingdoms and the Moors, who ruled over the Iberian Peninsula. Originating from North Africa, the Moors had established a rich Islamic civilization in Al-Andalus, while Christian realms like Castile and Aragon sought to reclaim their territories. The Reconquista was marked by centuries of warfare, characterized by battles such as the pivotal victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Over time, Christian forces gradually pushed southward, culminating in the fall of Granada in 1492 under the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, which effectively ended Muslim rule in Spain and Portugal. This conflict reshaped the region's cultural, religious, and political landscape, solidifying Christian hegemony and laying the groundwork for Spain's emergence as a major European power and subsequent colonial expansion.
