Over time, Christian forces gradually pushed southward, culminating in the fall of Granada in 1492 under the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, which effectively ended Muslim rule in Spain and Portugal. This conflict reshaped the region's cultural, religious, and political landscape, solidifying Christian hegemony and laying the groundwork for Spain's emergence as a major European power and subsequent colonial expansion.
