Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo together form the world’s first
commercial human space launch system - and is built and flying.
Virgin Galactic’s revolutionary vehicles are based on the history making prototype
SpaceShipOne, designed and built by Scaled Composites under the leadership of aerospace design legend, Burt Rutan. They herald the dawn of a new space age which promises to define the twenty first century in the way commercial aviation defined the
century before.
Virgin Galactic’s mission is to transform access to space for the benefit of life on Earth
by building and operating clean, efficient, safe and reusable vehicles which will open
the full potential of space to multiple users.
Its SpaceShipTwo system will fly private individuals and on thrilling trips to the blackness of space, where they will experience out-of-seat zero gravity and awe inspiring views of Earth. The system is elegantly fit for purpose and designed around a philosophy which avoids unnecessary complexity and strives for safety through simplicity. The all composite, dual fuselage WhiteKnightTwo, has a unique heavy-lift high-altitude capability allowing it to effortlessly and efficiently lift SpaceShipTwo to 50,000ft for a safe air launch. After release the all composite, two-pilot SpaceShipTwo ignites its controllable and safe hybrid rocket motor for a 3.5 times the speed of sound climb to space. Launching the spaceship at high altitude removes the inherent dangers of fuel heavy, vertical ground launches.
Once in space, the six astronaut passengers will leave their seats to enjoy a period of
zero gravity and views of Earth stretching a thousand miles in every direction. Re-entry
is enabled by the unique wing-feathering “shuttlecock” capability that sees the spaceship’s tail-booms rotate to a sixty degree angle to the body of the vehicle, providing a carefree and heat-free return to the Earth’s atmosphere. Then at around 70,000ft the tail sections return to their original position for an incredible glide back to the spaceport runway where astronaut wings await the returning adventurers.
The system will also be used by scientists as a research platform allowing, for the first
time, affordable and regular access to space for micro gravity and other experimentation.
The SpaceShipTwo system is the first step in a journey which will connect everyone to
space like never before.
